De ontwikkelingen in de humane genetica bieden voor mij als medisch psycholoog/psychotherapeut indrukwekkende vergezichten. Eindelijk – na generaties – gloort voor risicodragers voor de ziekte van Huntington, en andere tot nu toe onbehandelbare hersenziekten, enig toekomstperspectief. Predictieve DNA-diagnostiek geeft mogelijkheden de eigen toekomst te dirigeren. Hoop is niet alleen meer een illusie. Huntington is een fascinerend model voor de multidisciplinaire bestudering van erfelijke later in het leven optredende ziekten. We kunnen nu inzicht krijgen in de ontwikkeling van de persoonlijkheid onder invloed van zowel de erfelijke constitutie als de omgeving. Hadden ooit eerder de fundamentele, medische en sociale wetenschappen zo’n gemeenschappelijk onderzoeksterrein?
Aad Tibben (PhD) is professor at the Leiden University Medical Centre. He studied clinical psychology at the Free University Amsterdam. He defended his thesis "What is knowledge but grieving? On psychological aspects of presymptomatic testing for Huntington's disease" in 1993 (cum laude) at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is psychologist-psychotherapist at the Centre for Human and Clinical Genetics (section Genetic Counseling) and the dept. of Neurology at the Leiden University Medical Centre. He is also appointed at the dept. Clinical Genetics and (honorary) at the dept Medical Psychology & Psychotherapy, Erasmus University Medical Centre Rotterdam. He is project leader of the research line on psychological effects of predictive DNA-testing for late onset hereditary disorders, and international teacher in communication skills in genetics (Manchester, Birmingham, Genoa, Bologna, Australia). He was member of the Dutch Health Counsel Committee DNA-diagnostics and deputy member of the Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO). He is member of the European CRISCOM working group (Cancer Risk Communication). He is member of the committee on societal aspects of genomics of the centre of excellence CMSB (Center for Medical Systems Biology, Leiden).
